GARBAGE DISPOSALS
Garbage disposals did not become a common household item until after World-War 2. There are, to this day, mostly rural and farm houses where garbage is either carried away, mulched, buried, or fed to the pigs! The most common problems with these "grinding" machines are, truth be told, caused by abuse or, at the very least, misuse. I see folks all the time who pile a bunch of garbage in their sink while scraping dishes. Then they will force the garbage into the mouth of the disposal and then turn it and the water on at about the same time. This, or anything approaching it, is misuse. What often occurs as a result of doing it this way is that a dry chunk of refuse will plug either your trap, the "tee" just above your trap, the waste arm, or the drain itself. Now what? Your calling ARIZONA PLUMBING SERVICES, that's what! As much as we want and appreciate your business, we don't mind at all giving you some tips on how to avoid our reasonable costs. The proper use of your disposal is, first and foremost, be cautious with what you put in it. Anything hard (popcorn seed ever got ya stuck!)or stringy can easily restrict or even stop your unit from turning. What you're better off doing is scraping most of the garbage into your waste basket and the minimal remainder in the sink. What you want to do is first, turn on the water. Cold water will do just fine. Then turn on the machine. Lastly, using a utensil, not your hand, push the garbage into the mouth of the disposer a little bit at a time. Doing it this way prevents a large wad of garbage from shooting into your tubular waste under your sink and causing a stoppage. Also, common-sense though this may sound, PLEASE NEVER put your hand down into the machine. You would be amazed at how many folks get hurt badly doing this. If you turn on your disposer and get a "buzzing" sound, it means that the machine blades are probably stuck on some hard item. The blades, or "impellers", can easily get lodged against the inside cylinder of the machine with things like coins, popcorn seeds, tiny rocks, fruit pits and so on. Most disposers come with a large allen wrench that is inserted into the bottom center of the outside of the unit. This allows you to turn the inside impeller mechanism back and forth until the item becomes dislodged. A safety-minded plumber will do this and then use a "retriever" to pull out the "criminal" item!
