Irrigation, or sprinkler systems as they are often called, are quite basic plumbing systems that are most often installed and maintained by dedicated landscaping companies. Frequently they are installed by a homeowner with the skills needed to achieve installing a sprinkler system. Sprinkler systems for residential lawns and bubbler systems for hedges and other plants consist of a thin plastic water delivery hose that feeds each sprinkler head and bubbler. The "risers" that feed each sprinkler head or bubbler are threaded into easy-to-install "tees" in the supply line. Normally, in residential systems, a single water supply line will feed a set of valves that supply water to each "circuit" in the system. These valves are normally turned on and off by an electronic control box that can be preset for length of spray as well as hours and days of operation. The water that supplies the sprinkler system must first pass through a "backflow prevention" device. This device is important in that it prevents contaminated, or already-sprinkled, water from being vacuum pulled back into the potable water system in the event of a main water shut down. This can lead to serious and potentially unhealthful contamination of drinking water. There are, of course, commercial irrigation systems, such as at golf courses, that can be very large and quite complex.
