Tankless water heaters are certainly not a recent phenomenon. What is recent about them is their residential applications. They have become "all the rage"! Companies such as Bosch and Rinnai, along with many more too numerous to mention, have for many years produced high quality water heating systems of this type. These water heating devices are actually variations on boilers. They heat water when you need it, and when you need it ONLY. Restaurants sometimes use water heating devices known as "boosters" near their dishwashing machines. This allows the restaurant to set their large commercial water heater(s) at, say, 120 degrees, thereby preventing customers or employees from accidentally getting scalded by the 160 degree or higher water that it takes to properly sanitize dishes. The "booster", which is just a "mini" wall-hung boiler, will boost the 120 degree water from the heater and deliver it to the dishwashing machine only. There are many small to medium sized restaurants which are actually removing their light-commercial storage type water heaters and installing commercial, wall-hung, water heaters with no storage tank. If you have heard talk of these "new" water heaters with no tank, and want to find out if they are for you, then do your homework! The biggest problem we have discovered with residential use of these fine products is unreasonable expectations.
